Happy New Year 2015!

Hope everyone had a lovely New Year Eve.  Despite the best laid plans we ended up in the house cuddled up on the couch with a movie.  I did however purchase a bottle of bubbly which I am now drinking as I type this on New Years Day instead.

I spent the most day in front of the telly (severe weather and snowfall warning for our area) with Monty Python trying to work out the angle for my French house staircase.  I have never been good at math so it took a ridiculous amount of time and effort to finally figure it out.

HINT: make sure when you are measuring you draw your 23cm (height of the wall) on your bristol board before you start. It will help you get the right angle for your staircase
Here it is as complete as I can show. The gesso is just about finished drying as is the stain on the steps but it still needs paint.  Tomorrow the railing will be added, along with the cut and bent metal wire stair rails that are the right hand corner.

I am pleased with my progress thus far. Unfortunately I foresee a delay in the very near future because the lime-wood is being shipped from Australia and half the items I ordered ie: lights, doors etc. are either back ordered or unavailable.  I will soldier on and chart my progress.

Finished staircase.  I must admit it provided more challenges than I thought it would.  I am not entirely happy with the newel post as it attaches to the rail but it will do for now and if I can't live with it, I will attempt to fix it before installing it in the house.

  1. Happy new year! Yours sounds a little like mine! I've found a great source in the UK for lime/obeche - Cornwall model boats. Good product and really cheap shipping. Where didi you get your wood in Australia?

  2. I ordered it from Cornwall Model Boats too! Thanks Shannon. Any idea about a source for French door hardware? I am looking for the oblongy ovaly knobs Lea uses and can't find them anywhere.

  3. Not the same as Lea's knobs, but fancy door levers always say "French doors" to this (French/Quebecois) girl:

There is a gold version, but I think the gunmetal finish would lend itself more readily to an aged look. I'm saving several pairs of these for a future French-style build.

  4. Hi Skuptress, I really like the way that your staircase is looking and the handrail really looks Great! From the photo, it looks like a split cable but it is hard to tell. I love the atmosphere and style of this particular house and think that you are going to have a Ton of Fun, constructing it.
Good luck finding the hardware that you are looking for.

    1. You may also want to have a look at Catherine's home made french door handles on this site http://lemondecratifdecatherine.blogspot.com.es/
They may be of some interest to you.

  5. Thanks Elizabeth, it is actually braid that is painted with gesso and then acrylic.

Funny that I have been beating myself up about the French window (not door) hardware as I loved the little oval brass knobs and couldn't source them anywhere! Turns out they are just gold beads (lol) I think I can source those. I had a look at the blog you suggested, isn't it lovely? Will go back when I come home from work and go through it thoroughly. Thanks again

  6. It's looking good and that's a very handy hint to use braid painted with gesso and acrylic - something I need to be dealing with very soon for a staircase of my own to thank you for that.

  7. I used basswood instead of lime wood in mine and they are about the same. Your steps are beautiful.
